Memoirs of a Scatterbrain
Documentary about one of the most important artists of the 20th century.
The contrast could not be greater: young René Daniels in New York who knows the world and the same man 30 years later on his knees on a blank sheet to draw a circle. The documentary Memoirs of a Scatterbrain about the artist René Daniels (Eindhoven, 1950) tells the story how Daniels despite his handicap communicates through his recent paintings.
In Memoirs of a Scatterbrain can you see Daniels in his younger years: working in his studio, filming in Eindhoven pop venue 'De Effenaar' and in the early morning out with the Sex Pistols. But the documentary also shows the current struggle of Daniels with his disability. His voice is gone and his communication is limited to a thumb up or down.
Filmmaker Jan Thijssen visit Daniels in Eindhoven where he organizes his memories in a small notebook. Thijssen also takes you to the places of Daniels past: New York, Paris and Ghent. At the opening of his retrospective in Madrid and Amsterdam.
Memoirs of a Scatterbrain is a touching portrait of a great artist who after his stroke and rehabilitation has found its own way to share his thoughts and images.
